Burlington ON - The inconsistent weather that plagued the Southern Ontario region for the past 2 months peeked it’s ugly face on Thursday for round 2 of the Southern Ontario Open. After just three groups started their 2nd round, the rain began and at 8:15 am play was suspended due to inclement weather. Players then endured a four and half hour delay before round 2 would resume.
First round leader Robbie Greenwell of Victoria (BC) was two shots clear of the field starting the day, but two bogies early in his round caused him to battle hard for his final score of one over par 72. Greenwell made birdies on holes 16 and 18 to keep himself within one shot of the lead.

Burlington ON - “Home Sweet Home” is a very comforting saying that goes deeper than just the words. Coming back to a place where good things happen, can make a big difference in the game of golf. In the final round of the 2016 Southern Ontario Open, the former Georgetown (ON) native Robbie Greenwell climbed the leaderboard after a final round 62 to finish in fifth alone. Fast forward a year later where Greenwell, now residing in Victoria (BC), returns to Ontario for the Southern Ontario Open and looks to build off some great memories left over from last year’s final round at Hidden Lake GC’s New Course. After making the turn at 2 under par 33, Greenwell would go on to birdie holes 10, 11, 13, 14, 16, and 18 to post a back nine of 30 and a first round total of 8 under par 63. His total would be 2 shots better than the next competitor and give him some much needed confidence for the remainder of the week.... Burlington ON – In the brief five year history of the Southern Ontario Open, it has produced a very good list of Champions that include Eric Ross (2012), Derek Gillespie (2013), Dominic Bozzelli (2014), Christopher Ross (2015) and Raoul Menard (2016). The common thread for each champion is that they accomplished the feat on Hidden Lake Golf Club’s New Course. 2017 will mark the sixth playing of the Southern Ontario Open and it will be hosted by Clublink’s Hidden Lake Golf Club in Burlington ON. Superintendent Jeff Roundell is working daily to prepare the grounds and the New Course is expected to be in prime condition and will play like a major championship. The greens will be running PGA TOUR like with speeds between 10.5 and 11.5 on the stimp-meter. If Mother Nature cooperates, the fairways and greens will progressively firm up as the week moves on and the rough will receive its last cut on Friday prior to the Open. Burlington (ON) - PGA Tour Latino America Member Raoul Menard of Ange-Gardien (QC) gained much confidence after his performance this week at the Southern Ontario Open. His four round total of 63-68-66-63=260 -24 was good enough for a one shot victory over Jake Scott of Strongsville (OH). Scott started the fourth round as the 54 hole leader after posting three consecutive 64's but was out played in the end by Menard...
Burlington (ON) - Hidden Lake Golf Club (New Course) in Burlington (ON) will once again play host to the upcoming Southern Ontario Open July 26-29. This will be the fifth playing of the Championship and this year's edition is shaping up to be one of the strongest fields in recent years. With the RBC Canadian Open being contested not far down the road in Oakville (ON), the Southern Ontario Open saw it's field bolstered as both Dave Levesque from Ste-Catherine (QC) and Branson Ferrier from Barrie (ON) have committed to play at Hidden Lake Golf Club. Levesque comes into the Southern Ontario Open as the #1 ranked player in the PGA of Canada rankings, a position that earned him a spot in the Canadian Open field. Ferrier who recently turned professional and played his first event professionally on June 2, earned his ticket to the Canadian Open field by winning the Regional Qualifier at King's Forest Golf Course in Hamilton (ON). Burlington ON - The Southern Ontario Open presented by Pure Organic Foods was contested on July 22 to July 25 at Clublink's Hidden Lake Golf Club (New Course). Players in the field were extremely impressed by the golf course conditions, with green speeds consistently running 11 to 11.5 each round. One player stated "Bring the Grandstands, fans and grow the rough another inch and you can easily have the Canadian Open here this week." With the RBC Canadian Open being contested down the road at Glen Abbey Golf Club and the near magical run by Brantford ON native David Hearn it reminds us of a time over 10 years ago in 2004. Hearn made some history by being the only player in Canada to win at three professional levels before securing his 2005 PGA Tour Card. That summer he won a Great Lakes Tour Platinum event at Hidden Lake in which he followed it up with a win at the Times Colonist Open (MacKenzie Tour). A few weeks later he played in the Alberta Classic (Web.com Tour) and won by a stroke. Finally he secured his PGA Tour Card later in December, by draining a 60 foot putt to Qualify on the number. Ten years later the road to the PGA Tour is not as easy and players now have to spend time on each Tour to secure their spot at the highest level. Chris Ross, a native of Dundas Ontario and member of the MacKenzie Tour, has played the Southern Ontario Open the past three seasons. With the Mackenzie Tour taking a week off for the RBC Canadian Open, it offered an opportunity for Ross to come home and compete at Hidden Lake Golf Club. With other competitive options available during the same time period, Ross made the decision to be close to family and compete for the first prize that will ultimately assist in sending him to the Web.com Tour Qualifying School in the Fall... Burlington ON – The Southern Ontario Open has been a highly exciting tournament over it's first three years. In 2012, Eric Ross made a hole in one on the par 3 ninth hole that ultimately lead to him becoming the Inaugural Champion in event history. Michael Gligic and Derek Gillespie went head to head on the back 9 in the final round of 2013 before Gillespie took home the title. Last year Domenic Bozelli fired a final round 63 on Hidden Lake Golf Club's New Course to become the third different Champion in three years. 2015 should bring similar results as two local players now share the lead through 36 holes. Brian Cvetkovic (Burlington ON) and Christopher Ross (Dundas ON) both fired a pair of 3 under par 68’s to sit atop the leaderboard at 6 under par.... FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Burlington ON - The fourth edition of the Southern Ontario Open presented by Pure Organic Foods, Ontario's only OPEN golf championship, will be contested Wednesday July 22 through to Saturday July 25, 2015. The 72 hole event will be hosted by Hidden Lake Golf Club in Burlington ON. This will also be the fourth consecutive year the club will open it's doors to this prestigious event. The competition will feature top amateurs, professionals and PGA of Canada members from around the province. The inaugural year for the Open was in 2012 when it was conducted by Hi5golf who now operates the Golf Channel Am Tour Canada. In 2013, the Great Lakes Tour took over the event and has now grown into a wonderful tradition for local professional and amateur golfers in the province. Past champions include Eric Ross (2012), Derek Gillespie (2013) and Domenic Bozelli (2014). "It's a lot of work but we love doing it." said Tournament Director and Great Lakes Tour President David Brisson. "This event was started with passion four years ago with the vision to grow golf in Ontario. We plan to keep that vision alive for years to come." Though the field is small due to conflicting events for both PGA of Canada members and Touring Professionals, it will still be a highly competitive event with many players travelling from afar. Notable players include Camiko Smith from Bermuda, Jake Scott from Mooresville North Carolina and Christopher Ross from Dundas ON who currently plays on the MacKenzie Tour. He will be playing the first two rounds alongside younger brother Nicholas. Local favourites in the field will include:
Tee Times will begin at 7am on Wednesday. Pairings for Round One and Round Two are posted HERE For live scoring during the week you can view HERE Mexico’s Mauricio Azcue, Scotland’s Steven Smith tied for 2nd a shot back Burlington, Ontario – July 24, 2014 – Gardner-Webb alum Daniel Kim had a roller coaster round and, like any good roller coaster, the best was saved for last. The Toronto native had a day in his hometown Open which saw him make as many birdies as pars with seven, while adding three bogeys. However it was his eagle on 18 which put him at 6 under par and gave him a one shot lead after the first round of play. Kim was even par through his first 12 holes, with three birdies and three bogeys washing each other out. Then he caught fire birding his next four holes and eagling the sixth to finish his final six holes at six under par. The two players closest to Kim on the leader board are perhaps the two players who have come from the farthest away from Ontario; Mexico’s Mauricio Azcue and Scotland’s Steven Smith. Azcue, a former number one ranked amateur in Mexico, and Smith, a star at Western Carolina, both finished their first round at 5 under par. Kim’s countryman and former Kent State star Brett Cairns, out of Courtland, managed to finish his round at 4 under par which put him into a tie for 4th with two of the NGA Tour’s top regulars, Delaware alum Justin Martinson and Virginia alum Mac McLaughlin. Martinson, out of Avondale, Pa., has pulled off two wins this season with victories at the Gates Four Classic and the King Cadillac Shootout, while McLaughlin, out of Cleveland, Ohio, finished runner-up at last week’s Seven Lakes NGA Classic. Two other local Ontario golfers, each from opposite ends of the spectrum, finished at 3 under par and in a tie for seventh. Mississauga’s Greg Doherty, who starred at DePaul, was the Great Lakes Tour leading money winner last season while Waterloo’s Luke Moser, who is still competing for Troy, is playing in this week’s event as an amateur. Still seven other local Ontario competitors finished the day at 2 under par and are currently tied for ninth. The group includes local legend Christopher Ross, who starred at Eastern Michigan and dominated this past season’s NGA Tour Winter Series by winning 3 events in a row and running away with the tour’s money title. The six other local players are Georgia College alum Colton Kalkanis (Barrie), Gardner-Webb alum J.J. Regan (Burlington), Korean native Justin YW Kim (Hamilton), Indiana University of Penn alum Zack Kempa (Brantford), Drury alum Thomas Hay (Langley), and Louisville alum Sebastian Szirmak (Toronto) who has starred on the Great Lakes Tour the past two seasons. Auburn alum and leading NGA Tour money winner Dominic Bozzelli, out of Pittsford, N.Y., finished at one over par and is currently tied for 16th with 7 other players including former PGA Tour player and Florida alum Will Strickler. James Madison alum and 2014 NGA Tour Pro Series winner Jay Woodson, out of Richmond , Virginia, is one of eight players at even par and tied for 24th. This group also includes Stratford native Brett Nymeyer who is currently 2nd on the Great Lakes Tour money and points lists. Play in the 2014 Southern Ontario Open resumes Friday morning with round two tee times beginning at 7:30am on the championship Hidden Lake Golf Club in Burlington.
