Burlington ON - The inconsistent weather that plagued the Southern Ontario region for the past 2 months peeked it’s ugly face on Thursday for round 2 of the Southern Ontario Open. After just three groups started their 2nd round, the rain began and at 8:15 am play was suspended due to inclement weather. Players then endured a four and half hour delay before round 2 would resume. First round leader Robbie Greenwell of Victoria (BC) was two shots clear of the field starting the day, but two bogies early in his round caused him to battle hard for his final score of one over par 72. Greenwell made birdies on holes 16 and 18 to keep himself within one shot of the lead. Wil Wittmann of Detroit (MI) made his debut on the Great Lakes Tour earlier this season at GolfNorth Series #2 Settlers’ Ghost and made an immediate impact finishing in a tie for fourth. Wittmann started his second round with 6 straight pars before making a double bogey on the par five 7th hole sending him back to 3 under par for the tournament. However, he would bounce back and make birdie on the 8th hole and follow up his one over par front nine with 4 birdies and no bogies on the back nine to post a second round 68. His 36 hole total of 8 under par 134 was good for the solo lead.
Former Canadian Junior Champion and Golf Canada National Team Member Mitch Sutton of London (ON) would post a 4 under par 67, which was good for the low round of the day, and leave him just one shot back Wittmann’s lead. Joining Sutton at 7 under par for the tournament is Robbie Greenwell. There are currently five players tied for fourth at 6 under par. The third round will begin at 9:30 am on Friday July 14th with 33 players making the cut at 2 over par or better.
